Wilkes-Barre/Scranton bolstered its coaching staff on Monday, adding Brad Malone as an assistant coach.
Malone, 36, retired from playing in 2024 after a 13-year playing career as a forward that included 217 NHL games with the Avalanche, Hurricanes and Oilers. He went right into coaching last season, taking on a development coach role with the OHL's Oshawa Generals before being promoted to interim head coach in December. Under Malone, Oshawa posted a 23-11-3-1 record in the regular season and 13-8 in the playoffs before being eliminated in the OHL final.
“I guess from an outsider’s perspective the timeline is pretty short," Malone told the CHL league site on his transition to being a coach so quickly after retiring as a player. "But for me, being in the American League, being a captain, I worked with a lot of guys coming out of this situation, out of the CHL or young prospects coming out of college. I have a familiarity in terms of leading young men trying to reach their goal. So in that sense, it’s very familiar for me. And then on the coaching side of things, I just think from a young age in my playing career, I really understood.”
Malone added that his "philosophy is connect, care, then coach. That’s just me as a person. I’m trying to be authentic. I’m trying to be myself, trying to show the kids that it’s OK to be you, to be confident in your own skin."
Wilkes-Barre already had two assistants on its staff under Kirk MacDonald, with Sheldon Brookbank managing the defense and Nick Luukko the forwards.
Brad Malone is a cousin of former Penguin Ryan Malone, and a nephew of another former Penguin in Greg Malone.
